Midjourney Secret Parameters That Change Output
Most Midjourney users just type a prompt and hit enter. But the real power is in parameters — the hidden settings that control how your image looks. Master these three parameters and you go from "nice AI images" to "wait, that is AI?"
--chaos (0-100)
Controls how varied the four result images are. Low chaos = similar, safe results. High chaos = wildly different interpretations of your prompt.
- --chaos 0: All four images look similar. Good when you have a specific vision and want consistent options.
- --chaos 20: Good balance of variety. Most useful default for exploration.
- --chaos 50: Significantly different results. Great for brainstorming visual concepts.
- --chaos 100: Maximum chaos — completely different interpretations. Use when you want to be surprised.
--stylize (0-1000)
Controls how "artistic" the output is. Low stylize = more literal, photorealistic. High stylize = more artistic interpretation, Midjourney's "opinion" shows through.
- --stylize 0: Photorealistic, minimal artistic interpretation. Good for product mockups and realistic portraits.
- --stylize 100: Default. Balanced between literal and artistic. Good starting point for most prompts.
- --stylize 250: More artistic. Midjourney adds its own creative flair. Good for illustrations and concept art.
- --stylize 750: Highly artistic. Bold colors, dramatic compositions. Good for posters and album covers.
- --stylize 1000: Maximum artistic flair. Abstract, dreamlike, sometimes surreal. Use sparingly.
--weird (0-3000)
The most underrated parameter. Adds surreal, unexpected, unconventional elements to your images. Low weird = normal. High weird = "what did I just create?"
- --weird 0: Normal results. No surreal elements.
- --weird 100: Slightly unusual. Small unexpected details.
- --weird 500: Definitely weird — surreal elements, unusual compositions. Good for artistic projects.
- --weird 1500: Very weird. Dreamlike, abstract, sometimes unsettling.
- --weird 3000: Maximum weird. Completely unexpected results. Use for abstract art or when you want to be genuinely surprised.
Pro Tip: Combine Them
The magic happens when you combine parameters. Try these combinations:
- Artistic cityscape: "a futuristic city at sunset --chaos 30 --stylize 750 --weird 200"
- Surreal portrait: "a portrait of a woman made of flowers --chaos 10 --stylize 500 --weird 800"
- Photorealistic product: "a minimalist white sneaker on a marble surface --chaos 0 --stylize 50 --weird 0"
- Abstract concept art: "the concept of time flowing backwards --chaos 80 --stylize 1000 --weird 1500"
Other Useful Parameters
- --ar 16:9: Widescreen aspect ratio. Good for desktop wallpapers and blog headers.
- --ar 9:16: Vertical. Good for phone wallpapers and social media stories.
- --no [element]: Negative prompting. "--no text, watermark" removes those elements.
- --seed [number]: Use the same seed to get similar results across different prompts.
